“At the next election we must take our fight to the ballot box!” Letter to the Editor by Syracuse NAACP President Linda Brown-Robinson

So here we go again, at this juncture there should be no shock at a man (Number 45) that spews hatred, bigotry on a daily, hourly or minute by minute basis. With that said I wasn’t prepared to pen a letter since he speaks out at any given moment however when I heard yet again the latest breaking Trump news his remarks this time were just to egregious and therefore I couldn’t stand idly by and not pen a letter as the NAACP President on yet another of his latest hurtful comments. This time, I believe he has stooped to an all-time low.

How did we as a nation allow this man to become president and use the highest office in the land to spew insults and incite hate and bigotry – here’s what I believe, by and large enough of us didn’t do what we needed to do, we didn’t exercise our rights our privilege by taking this to the ballot box. Outrage should come from Democrats, Republicans, Independents, Green Party, etc.

I and we as Black, White, Brown, Red or Yellow people should not just be outraged as a people but as a nation because he’s coming after a race like yours soon. Call it what you want but in my opinion it’s blatant racism, does he realize that this country was and is built on welcoming all peoples to our shores.

How ludicrous his statements on immigration have been, does he realize (yes he does) that he himself would not be in the United States had his father not emigrated from Germany. So what I’ve deduced from his statement is that he believes people who don’t look like me (he that is) need not approach the United States Borders.

Derogatory remarks such as these only continue to further divide this country and prevents us from moving forward as a nation. At the next election we must take our fight to the ballot box, our outrage should come in the form of a vote, for those wishing to hold an elected office whether it be on a local, state or national level.

For those not familiar with the alleged quote it read in part: “Why do we want all these people from ‘shithole countries’ coming here?” “Why do we need more Haitians? Take them out.”

Allegedly #45 asked… why do we want people from Haiti and more Africans in the US and added that the US should get more people from countries like Norway, if that doesn’t fly in the face racism. It’s been reported that his derogatory remarks are being well played across his base, however they should be outraged as well, because the last I checked they are immigrants as well …unless they are of Native American heritage then his base and the balance of us are ALL IMMIGRANTS.

So please make no mistake all his remarks are NO slip of the tongue they all very much planned and calculated in his mind well crafted and designed to incite his base. Whatever happened to humanity, humility and love?

If you are outraged then get involved stay involved invoke change, the greatest weapon we have is the ballot box!

President,  Syracuse Onondaga NAACP
