    Wear Brown on May 17th to Celebrate the 69th Anniversary of the Brown vs. Board of Education Supreme Court Decision

    May 17 marks the 69th anniversary of the landmark Brown vs. Board of Education U.S. Supreme Court decision de-segregating public schools. In this milestone decision, the Supreme Court ruled that separating children in public schools on the basis of race was unconstitutional. It signaled the end of legalized racial segregation in the schools of the United States, overruling the “separate but equal” principle set forth in the 1896 Plessy v. Ferguson case.

    It wasn’t until 1965, after years of intimidation, murders, and advocacy that the path to the voting booth was cleared for Black people with the federal Voting Rights Act of 1965. The Act is a bedrock law protecting every American’s right to register to vote and cast their ballot. It remains one of the hardest-fought safeguards for Black Americans and other minority groups.
